Ohé en Laak (Limburg: Genoa and Laak) is a small, idyllic village around which, as a result of sand and gravel excavations, various ponds have been created, the Maas ponds. De Maasplassen is a vast, continuous network of large and small lakes. Most people are not aware of the fact that the Maasplassen, with an area of more than 3000 hectares, is also the largest contiguous water sports area in the Netherlands. These are used for water recreation on a large scale.
Together with Stevensweert, Ohé en Laak is located on the island in de Maas, a (former) island between two river arms of the Maas, just west of the town of Echt at an altitude of approximately 26 meters. The main stream of the Maas here forms the natural border with Belgium and is therefore also called the ‘Grensmaas’. The other arm is the Oude Maas.
You can cross the river Maas by ferry at various points in Central Limburg.
There is a car ferry between Kessel and Reuver, which can also be used by cyclists and pedestrians. In addition, there are special bicycle ferries and ferries for hikers, at different places.
